We learned respect for the .308 Winchester caliber from serious hunters and police marksmen, several of them distinguished veterans who served in Vietnam. The .308’s short case was always easier to produce accuracy from than its venerable ancestor, the .30-06 Springfield. Photo shows a Remington 700P in .308 caliber that is brand new and unfired, that we got from a collapsed Department Order. Manufacturer, of course, is Remington Arms of Ilion New York. Factory number is 25709. The foundation of the 700 action, writes the factory, is its unique bolt design. The bolt face, barrel, and receiver surround and support the cartridge head with three overlapping rings of solid steel. The Model 700 receiver is machined from a solid block of ordnance-grade steel, then drilled and tapped for scope mounts. All our standard Model 700 Police rifles have heavy, free-floating 26 inch barrels crowned at the muzzle for unparalleled accuracy and stability. The Model 700P, Remington Continues, features an H-S Precision® composite stock reinforced with Du Pont Kevlar and fiberglass. They'll stay dimensionally stable in any weather and under the worst tactical situations. The stock is laid up around an aircraft-grade aluminum bedding block that runs up the entire length of the receiver. It has a textured, black, non-reflective finish and comes with double forward sling swivel studs. Barrel is recess crowned 26 inch, .810 diameter at the muzzle and .895 at the forend, 1:9 right hand twist. Chambering is .308 Winchester caliber, 4+1 capacity with classic floorplate type internal magazine. Weight empty is 9 pounds unscoped, with center of gravity beneath the forward end of the chamber. Receiver is drilled and tapped for Weaver 35 and 36 bases, or for 700RHSA One Piece JR Redfield type bases. Leupold one piece base numbers are 50003 or 50004. Trigger is .325 smooth faced ribbed steel Remington X-Mark, externally adjustable. It is pre-set on 5 pounds, easily movable up or down. Stock is completely free floating, clear back to the chamber sweep, paper will slide. Buttstock length of pull measures 13 5/8 inches from the trigger face to the end of the 3/4 inch factory Super Cell recoil pad. Photo specimen is the first new unissued 700P we’ve had in a decade .308 Win Mag, and it may be the last. 700Ps often command prices upwards of $1500 apiece.
