Browning Sweet 16 FN Belgian 1953 28 in Cutts Rib VG

Serially numbered X916xx, this round knob, lightning-grip Sweet Sixteen Browning Auto Five was manufactured by Fabrique Nationale in Belgium in 1953. We consider it to be in Very Good Condition on the strength of its walnut’s lack of cracking and on account of the majority of original bluing remaining. Receiver bluing is original matte blue combined with brown patina. The underside edges of the receiver show substantial amounts of weakness, or even white, but note the strength of the trigger guard itself. Forward screw on the lower tang shows moderate stress, and there is a small screwdriver scratch on its right side, but the rear screws show only light stress. Trigger has perhaps 30 percent of its original gold remaining. Screws on the left side of the receiver show light to moderate stress, as the photos show. Barrel has most of its original bluing up to the heat treatment point about 2 inches back of the period Cutts. We estimate that the Cutts Compensator was installed in the 1950s, so we consider that it is period and an asset to the shotgun. It comes with only one Cutts Tube, a tight .650 Modified. Internally, the barrel’s chamber is excellent and clean. Bore shows about 40 percent very light etchy-looking pitting forward of the chamber for about 6 inches, but forward of that, the crucial area for patterning, the bore is clean and excellent.
This shotgun has some very nice wood, despite minor detracting features. Little of the gloss finish remains, but in its place there is some gloss residue but a nice oil finish with only moderate amounts of residue among the checkering. Butt pad is genuine Browning, a late addition but appropriate; and the length of pull is the standard 14 inches. Extensive light scratching and scuffing is only moderate except for a scratch emanating from the top tang in a zig-zag fashion. This is not, our gunsmith assures us, a crack; it only affects the surface for its .002 or so depth. We detect no other hints of cracks anywhere in the wood, including the forend.
Despite what has been no doubt a distinguished hunting career in the fields of West Tennessee, this is a very attractive old Sweet 16. It has been hunted with, but has been well maintained and has not been abused at all. It is respectable enough to be collectable, and there is no question as to its mechanical soundness and serviceability. It will remain a death threat to pheasants and doves for many years to come.
