This is an early Nazi conversion of a Gewehr 98 (Hanel 1918 - very hard-to-find maker of Gewehr 98's in 1918) to 98K configuration and is likely the winner of a Wehrmacht Armorers' makeover contest. The gun has NOT been re-barreled; the original barrel has been cut back and crowned. All numbers match (many are re-numbered to the receiver)except The nose piece (where the bayonet attaches; proofed e/280(?)) and the two barrel bands which have the identical serial number (taken from the same gun), and the floorplate (late war Mauser). The nosecap and barrel band are marked "1" and additionally the nosecap is marked with an eagle/1. The rear sight base is marked "S42K" (1934)on the left and has "P/74" proofs in a horizontal H on the right and the sight is proofed "K" and "55" in a horizontal base. The 1937-vintage stock is laminated and clearly numbered to the gun on the underside of the wrist. Also present on the wrist of the stock is an Eagle/359 (Walther). The bolt is re-numbered (to the receiver)and proofed E/63 (Mauser). The bolt stop is Polish (renumbered to the receiver), the recoil lug is Gustloff, and the follower is '44 vintage. Whew. And there are probably things I missed too. The blueing is excellent. One might surmise that this gun went back to Walther and/or Mauser for a rework but when and how many times is speculative. Whoever did the rework had a varied supply of parts and took the time to re-number most of them. Downside: a duffle cut that needs to be reset because the handguard will not fit under the band. The is a replacement handguard but the wood color and grain are an excellent match. As odd as this gun is it is truly honest. No import marks. FFL or C&R required.
