A very nice antique Winchester Model 1873 lever action carbine with 18" barrel. Barrel is chambered in a 44 W.C.F. (44-40) caliber. Serial number is 134367A. This is a very early third model carbine, manufactured in 1883 and is absent of caliber marking on the barrel and the brass carrier, which is correct for early models.

According to the Winchester Book 1 of 1000 written by George Madis, 36.6% of the total production of model 73's were carbines. Saddle ring carbines were designed to be short, light, in a military-style configuration for use as an all-purpose utility gun and suitable for use on horseback. Most were used hard and lived outdoors where they were poorly sheltered from the elements unlike their pampered brother, the sporting rifle. The result is that the survival rates for carbines are quite low, as you can see by how many carbines are available.

The metal condition of this gun is very good for its age and it has turned a nice patina. The barrel address is very legible. The barrel measures 18" to the breach. It still retains the original ladder sight marked 1873. The buttstock is in excellent condition with no cracks or repairs. The forearm has a small hairline crack that is not going anywhere (see photo). The wood to metal fit is tight and perfect. The bore is in good condition with a nice shine and descent rifling with only very light pitting. Mechanically the carbine is perfect. It loads and ejects ammunition flawlessly. The dustcover slides perfect and it remains tight.

Cody letter will be included but doesn't state much other than the fact that the gun is a carbine (see photo).

I have fired this gun several times. It shoots well and is in great working condition.

Buyer to pay by check or money order. I WILL NOT ship this gun until payment has posted to my account. No exceptions. Upon purchase, please contact me directly to coordinate payment and shipping.

Please ask questions! If you need more pictures, let me know and I'll be glad to send them. This is a great gun and I want you to be happy with your purchase!
