First generation and shipped to Marshall Wells Hardware Co., August 20, 1907 (serial #298xxx) with nine other guns. Wells had stores in Minnesota, Oregon, Montana and Winnipeg, Canada, but the specific store was not recorded. It has 4.75" barrel, guttta percha grips and is in .38 WCF (.38-40). When you pick up the gun and look a little closer, you begin to notice a few things. The front sight has obviously been filed on the sides to give a bead silhouette when sighting. The trigger pull is very light and crisp. There is more wear on the right side of the trigger guard than on the left - certainly a right handed shooter. When viewed from the rear, the hammer has slightly beveled edges. When you pull the grips off, you find an old custom hammer spring and leather buffer pad. A good gunsmith has tuned it at some point. Finally, the right grip has a more brown color (doesn't show up in the pictures) probably from being exposed to more sun and weather. The overall finish has turned to an even gun metal blue-gray patina, but the mechanics are correct. Serial numbers match, but those on the butt are very worn. The bore has some pitting but strong rifling. A Colt's authentication letter goes with the gun. Accompanying the Colt is a vintage H. H. Heiser basket weave carved, double loop holster.
