From a local estate comes this specimen of the Colt .32 Automatic Pistol, model of 1903 Hammerless. This model was favored by all manner of people, from Ranger Frank Hamer to Bonnie Parker to Al Capone. Manufacturer marking on the left side of the frame is Patented Apr. 20, 1897. Dec. 22.1903 / Colt’s Pt. F.A. Mfg. Co. Hartford. CT. U.S.A. Caliber marking right side slide is Colt Automatic / Calibre .32 Rimless Smokeless, which translates .32 ACP Caliber. Design is John Moses Browning’s, semi automatic single action blowback pistol with internal hammer, main safety and grip safety. Barrel is 3 3/4 inch type 2 with integral barrel bushing, six groove 1:16 left hand rifling. Sights are original low blade front with dovetailed low profile rear that is drift adjustable only for windage. Magazine is 8 round, 8 + 1 fully loaded capacity. Weight empty is 23 1/2 ounces. This pistol is all original with the exception of its finish. Grips are original factory black composite. Finish is recent professional reblue, matte blue. Right side of frame has visible residual pitting that we estimate affects 20 percent of that side, and another 10-15 percent of the left side slide surface. Lettering remains clear throughout. Magazine surface shows similar residuals. We rate this Colt as Good / Refinish, perhaps Very Good. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore shows faint etchiness in the rifling grooves toward the back, but lands are strong and clean throughout. Chamber exhibits faint amounts of etchiness. Mechanism is clean and functional, we have fired a clip full of .32 ACP Fiocchi FMC ammunition with no hitches in this pistol. Its home domicile was in the Hatchie River bottomland area, fairly proximate to the Mississippi Line, prime moonshiner territory here in West Tennessee during the original owner’s lifetime.
