Since Ithaca marketed the Model 72 Saddle Gun from 1973 until 1978 only, this one is easily dated to those years. It was not a notable rifle, nowhere near the quality of its Marlin and Winchester Competitors. Much more important, however, is that this Erma / Ithaca is the direct ancestor to the current crop of Henry Rifles manufactured in the Bronx. The Henrys are respectable medium priced rifles, and the Erma / Ithacas were, too. This Ithaca 72 will only grade Good, perhaps Very Good, finishwise, since it has substantial even wear on its steel barrel and magazine tube, and a bit less wear showing on its alloy parts – its receiver, front sight, barrel and forend bands. The most appealing quality of this rifle consists in its nicely refinished walnut stock and forend. The buttstock is a particularly select piece of walnut with rich patterns and burl, and three birdseye knot patterns on its right side. Barrel is 18 inch carbine length, and the capacity is somewhere around 12 rounds of Long Rifle ammunition. The lever action mechanism is in Very Good Condition, and we test fired two tubes of mixed Remington, Winchester, and CCI ammo through it with no problems.
