HG5710 Here is a late pinned barrel / recessed or counterbored cylinder variant of a Smith & Wesson Classic, named model simply The .357 Magnum. It was the company’s original offering in the caliber, descendant of the .38/44 Outdoorsman. Numbered model is 27-2, blue steel 6 inch barrel with high partridge front sight, black blade adjustable rear sight, full .400 serrated face color casehardened target trigger and matching .500 Target Hammer. Grip frame is true square butt, serrated fore and aft; and the top strap and rear sight body are their correct and original blue checkered finish. Serial number is N812000 range, manufactured in President Reagan’s Election Year of 1980. This revolver comes to us from a collection in Texas, and we are told it has some slight claim to individual celebrity because the great Massad Ayoob once fired it in an exhibition in the early 1980s. That much is only oral history, we have no documents to verify it. This is, at any rate, an attractive and serviceable specimen of the Model 27 series. Holster wear is moderate, with whitening on the sides of the muzzle and on the sharp edges here and there. Note that there is some white-streak scouring on the yoke itself, and moderate operation whitening to the ejection rod. We rate it as Very Good, eighty percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice so that our distinguished shoppers can judge finish grade for themselves. It is excellent mechanically. Bore, cylinder chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Lateral movement to the cylinder is moderate with the trigger relaxed, but negligible with the trigger fully depressed. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent, and the hammer travels an additional 5 degrees after the cylinder times in all six positions on double action. On single action, the hammer travels 20 – 25 degrees on all six after timing, and single action trigger pull is a crisp 3 3/8 pounds. Grips are Herrett Cocobolo, new replacement.
