US MODEL 1841 "MISSISSIPPI" Remington 1849 Rifle
<4> This is a Model 1841 US percussion rifle known as “Mississippi rifle” manufactured on Remington’s Contract, Herkimer, NY with 1849 marked on the back of the lock. The model 1841 served in both the Mexican War and Civil War. It has a.54 Caliber barrel with an excellent rifled bore. The lock is tight while the hammer is solid on both click positions. The rifle has a browned barrel, case-hardened lock and hammer and brass furniture with the distinctive large brass patch box with place for spare nipple. The barrel and lock have a smooth appealing patina finish without any significant pitting except in the area around the firing nipple. The stock is oil-finished walnut and in fine condition with handling marks expected of a Civil War weapon and with no cracks. Both of the cartouches on the left side of the stock are clearely visible. The 33” round barrel has a bore is in it's original .54 caliber configuration. It is in excellent bright condition with sharp rifling. A large number "12" on the top of the butt plate may be an assignment, company or regimental number.
The M1841 was continually modified and saw extensive service in both service with both Federal and Confederate forces during the first years of the Civil War. Initially, the rifle was not fitted with a bayonet. However, beginning in 1855, the Model 1841 rifle was re-manufactured to support a sword bayonet. According to Remington, on April 25, 1861 the United States Ordnance Department sent 5000 Model 1841 Mississippi Rifles to the state of New York to arm its hastily assembled volunteer troops. Since the original Mississippi Rifles had no provision for bayonets a contract was signed on May 30, 1861 with Remington for furnishing and fitting sword bayonets to the 5000 Rifles. Remington made the relatively simple alteration of attaching bayonet studs to the right side of the rifle barrel. Under two contracts with Collins & Co for Bayonets only 3268 Rifles of the 5000 were altered and delivered. This Rifle’s Barrel was altered but the lug is missing.
While there is no FFL license required, the cost of shipping and insurance is $44.

Payment options: Payment made using USPS Money Orders will ship as soon as payment and required paperwork arrives. Due to recent increased use of Counterfeit Cashier’s Checks, these payments will be held for bank clearance prior to shipping. Personal and business checks are also gladly accepted, however may delay shipping 2 weeks for bank clearance (We know the good checks clear faster, however, bank are sometimes slow in notification of a returned check).
