In an attempt to secure a government contract during the Civil War, Whitney borrowed the name of Manton, a respected firearms manufacturer from England, and was successful. The guns turned out to be no better than the ones rejected by Union Army inspectors that he had built in his own name, so only about 2,000 are estimated to have been manufactured.
