We are indeed blessed to have some talent in West Tennessee when it comes to authentic primitive weapons. The definitive name, of course, is the late Mr. Turner Kirkland from Union City, founder of Dixie Gun Works. Here is a product of the collaborative efforts of his first and second generation students, a half-octagon, thoroughly primitive hand made local flintlock that is fully traditional and, with the exception of its .535 round ball Green Mountain barrel, totally hand made. The P+ Maple stock was made by our old friend Mr. Jack Garner of Corinth, Mississippi. Hammer and lock are by Mr. Steve Baxter of Eads, Tennessee; and Mr. Matt Avants and Richard Horn also participated. Barrel is Green Mountain provenance, custom turned to 1/2 octagonal. The exclusive owner and final finisher of this rifle was Mr. Jaime Keele, long time resident of our ancestral campground smack in the middle of the old Hurst Nation, in McNairy County. Mr. Keele is one of our most astute technicians, a career machinist by trade and also one of the top ten percussion marksmen in Tennessee. Barrel is 39 inches, and its bore is perfect. We have known Mr. Keele for 30 years, and have yet to see him with a spot of rust in the bore of any firearm he ever owned. Finish is authentic Rust brown, and the only detraction is a whitened contact spot on the right side of the barrel 15 inches back of the muzzle with perhaps a half dozen tiny scours here and there on the wood, none of which are conspicuous and none of which penetrate the original semi-gloss finish. Lock surface, hammer and pan face are a combination gun metal gray and brown patina. Replacement pricing on similar rifles is $2,000 apiece or more in our area.
