Beginning in 1988, many of us became familiar with Smith & Wesson's new numbering system for its metal frame auto pistols, descendants of its time-honored 39 and 59 series. The 669's descendants included the best known variant, the 6906, which was stainless and alloy, and should have been 6903, not 6906. This one, like wise, the double-action-only descendant of the excellent little 669, should have been numbered 6943. It is a lightweight alloy frame with stainless steel slide and parts, and only weighs in at 26.5 ounces empty. The third digit of the number is crucial on this one, the 4, that signifies full time double action. On none of the metal frames was this variation more appropriate than on the 6900 type. These are dimensionally compact pistols but they have double-stacked magazine wells; that is, they will operate with even the huge 20 round magazines that S&W marketed for its 5900. This 6946, like its better known sibling, will readily accept any 59 or 5900 magazine. And even though it was a cutting-edge state-of-the-art pistol at its inception some 25 years ago, the 6900s are now traditional classics, seldom found, and much searched after. This double action only variant only has two of the three traditional safeties. It has a firing pin safety to guard against accidental discharge if the pistol is dropped, and a magazine safety that renders the pistol inoperable even if there is a live round in the barrel. Barrel length is 3 1/2 inches, but these outshot many of their bigger ancestors for accuracy due to the distinctive S&W Third Generation muzzle configuration that insured consistent bushing lockup shot after shot. Hammer and trigger are traditional classic Smith & Wesson Satin Stainless, a .260 bobbed hammer and .304 smooth combat trigger. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent, about 12 pounds of pressure through a short 11/16 inch trigger pull. These are, as they were intended, concealable, light, compact combat pistols where officers or carry permittees have expertise in drawing and on-target firing from a concealed position. Maximum overall length from the muzzle to the end of the grip frame beavertail area is just under 7 inches; maximum height is 5 1/2 inches from rear sight to end of magazine finger rest; and the maximum thickness is 1 1/8 inches, about the length of a 9mm cartridge. This specimen was manufactured in 1992 from its serial number prefix. Production only ran from 1991 through 1998. Its surface detractions amount to moderate holster and carry contact, scuffing and buffing on its sharp edges and on the shoulder areas of its slide. We rate it as Very Good, since somewhere near 80 percent of its original finish is intact. Photos, at any rate, should suffice for interested parties to judge finish for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Pistol will come with its original issue 12 round Pre-Ban Magazine, the only one we got with it. We're offering this fine, solid, compact Smith & Wesson 9mm for only $ 369.95. Not for sale to Massachusetts destinations. Not transferable to civilians in California, Chicago, D.C., or NYC. Freight paid but no magazine included for civilian buyers in Hawaii, New York, Puerto Rico, Toledo, or any jurisdiction with a 10 round magazine limit.
