Purdey Extra 20b- HARRY KELL ENGRAVED, LETTER, SINGLE TRIGGER

Purdey reserves the term "EXTRA" for guns that go beyond the beauty and features of their "BEST" guns, often including the trade name "Purdey" in gold, deeply chiseled fences, and special engraving that deviates from the famous Purdey rose and scroll. "Extra" guns are a rare find. This fine gun, serial number 26166 shipped in 1959, is an especially notable gun as IT IS LIKELY THE LAST GUN ENGRAVED BY THE LATE HENRY "HARRY" KELL JR., and so documented in the factory letter. Kell engraved guns are highly sought after, as he was considered to be the very best at his trade, ushering in a new era of engraving for British makers, transitioning the traditional tight English scroll to deeper, more open styles with deeply accented, realistic game scenes. The great Ken Hunt apprenticed under Harry Kell, who died in 1958, the same time this gun was being produced. This is a delightful 20b, unaltered since it left Purdeys, with the exception for its return to Purdey in 1971 for the factory installation of the single trigger. In nearly new condition, it is a rare offering at a very attractive price, making it a grand investment vessel in which to park your funds while you enjoy its use. The gun is cased in the factory motor case in excellent condition.

The 26" chopper lump barrels retain 98% blue, mirror bores, proofed w/2 3/4" chambers, choke .005/.010 restrictions, bore diameter of .618/.619, minimum wall thickness of 25 thou right, 29 thou left, just a few very light handling marks, special "narrow matted rib", no dents or dings, ribs tight and barrels ring like church bells, tight on face and hinge like a new gun, ejectors strong and timed, factory "cross-hatching" clearly evident on breech face, clear sharp lettering and stamps, a great set of barrels.

The Harry Kell engraved action retains 99% factory case color, deep chiseled open vine and scroll engraving, Purdey name gold inlaid, excellent screws, beaded fences, the word "safe" in gold, tight action with lever slightly right of center, Purdey single trigger with crisp trigger pulls, trigger guard retains 96% blue, AWESOME! LIKELY THE LAST EXAMPLE OF KELL'S WORK!

The deeply figured Turkish walnut English style buttstock retains most all of its oil finish, excellent checkering, perfect wood to metal fit, drop points, no cracks or repairs, just a few light handling marks. The LOP is 14 9/16" to the single trigger position, 13 3/4" to the end of the wood (thin Purdey factory leather pad is in excellent condition but could be made longer for longer LOP), 2" drop at heel, 1 7/16" drop at comb, 3/8" cast off (dimensions can be bent to your specs within 14 days of purchase), just a gorgeous set of wood befitting of this Purdey Exta Finish small bore shotgun.

The cost of a Purdey Extra exceeds $120,000 if purchased today from the factory. With the prospect of being Kell's last engraved gun a very real one, this gun has special importance as history progresses, hence extra value. The gun itself is spectacular, weighing 5 3/4lbs, balanced perfectly between your hands, an upland gun extraordinaire! In near new condition, there is no reason to order new, and there is no wait as there is with a new gun. What a great investment and example of the finest gun art on the planet.

There are more photos upon request. There is a 30 day mechanical warranty on this gun.
