L.C. Smith Crown Grade 16ga.- ONE OF 65 EVER MADE- GORGEOUS, RARE

The Crown Grade Elsie; one of the finest, most elegant American doubles ever produced. It is hard to argue that statement when considering shotguns in the “affordable” category. The Crown Grade was certainly a special, “MADE TO ORDER” shotgun, with only 800 or so made in all gauges, and only 65 made in the wonderful 16 bore. If you consider loss and damage, there are likely less than 55 Crown Grade 16’s left on the planet. What a find we have here with this 1923 vintage Elsie, with its elegant English stock, highly figured walnut, elaborately engraved with rose and scroll background and finely chiseled bird dogs on either side. The L.C. Smith was the only commercially successful true sidelock gun from the glory days of the vintage American double. What a canvas to lay down your art as an engraver, and what a functional, strong, and simple action was created in the venerable “Elsie”.

The Crown Steel 28” barrels have 100% rust blue, no dents, dings, pits, or scratches, clear lettering, gorgeous, clear, engraving, tight ribs, mirror bores, internal diameter of .655 (factory, no honing), choked IC/IM (.012/.025), minimum barrel wall thickness of 32 thousandths, 2 9/16” chambers (can shoot modern loads as is, but can be lengthened to 2 ¾” with extended cones for $140. This will help reduce recoil and improve patterns), double ivory beads, ejectors, barrels tight on breech face and hinge pin. IMPECCABLE.

The action is tight with the lever well right of center, retains about 30% factory case color, double triggers with crisp pulls, trigger guard beautifully engraved with sharp, clear rose and scroll engraving, 100% niter blue, excellent screws throughout, ejectors timed perfectly, engraving clear and clean, everything in excellent mechanical order.

The beautifully restored wood is highly figured, factory original, checkering recut, all pores filled, no cracks, splits or repairs anywhere, borderless factory checkering, fully checkered forend, forend iron engraved on the underside, 14” LOP to butt plate, 2 3/8” drop at heel, 1 5/8” drop at comb for great dimensions (stock can be bent to your specs for $140 additional cost and will be completed within 10 days of purchase, pad can be added to lengthen LOP), excellent wood to metal fit. JUST FABULOUS!
