Photos show the first specimen we’ve ever had of the new Double Tap 9mm Derringer type handgun, billed as Tactical Pocket Pistol. Manufacturer is Double Tap Defense Advanced Technology Firearms of St. Louis, Missouri. This model is the descendant of the Heizer Defense Double Tap, from Florida. Heizer credited the World War II issue Liberator pistol for its inspiration. Basic outline of the pistol harks back to the Sharps and Remington designs of the 1850s, however, and even the COP four barreled pistols from the 1970s. Type is tip up breech loading derringer style with internally rotating sear that engages the floating firing pins successively. Construction is steel barrels, firing pin bushings and internal parts with a lightweight alloy frame. Width is only .665 inch, 3.9 inch height and 5.5 inch length. Barrels are 3 inch. Sight is low integral ramp type, with fixed shallow notch rear. Weight empty is only 13 ounces. Chambering on this DT009001 variant is 9mm Luger caliber. Factory recommendations are against +P ammunition, or reloads, or imported ammunition; and reports we’ve read give smooth functioning with domestic US made brass case factory ammunition. Trigger is .350 serrated face alloy, with two distinct pull stages from 6 pound initiation to approximately 15 pounds firing point. This is a pocket gun, and a well made one. It is not a target pistol and is not particularly pleasant to shoot, even in 9mm caliber. Photo specimen and its identical mate that we have both come to us from another dealer. Neither of them have been fired or transferred, both are brand new in their original boxes with all their papers, and fired brass envelopes that are not dated. Since both pistols are under factory warranty we will not offer a return privilege. Replacement pricing on this pistol in our area is upwards of $500, and they aren’t easy to come by.
