The rifles were produced only 1 year unlike the common carbines. These rifles do not have the tang safety the lawyers at Winchester put on the new guns they produce. This rifle has a 26 inch octagon barrel and is very uncommon in comparison to the 20 inch round barrel carbine. It has a metal forend tip and a cresent buttplate, the carbines have instead a barrel band and a rounded carbine buttplate making the rifles much more attractive. The Browning 1886's were made the way JM Browning designed them without a safety or the rebounding hammer. Modern Winchesters have both with the hammer causing ignition problems with some ammo.
