The barrel is marked 1863 at the breach and has a 3-leaf rear sight while the lock is marked 1864 & U.S. Springfield with an eagle on the side plate. The barrel is rifled and I believe is .58 caliber. The stock has barrel bands that are secured with springs rather than screws. Note: I have been given some additional information from a GA Antique Arms regular and I have adjusted the ad as a result. The gun is in overall good shape, the lock functions properly – safe at half-cock and holds & releases at full-cock. Based on the advice I received I will clean the bore and see if I can get a better description of its condition; though it doesn’t look bad from what I can see at the muzzle. Beyond that I don’t know much about this rifle or its history as it was passed down through a friend’s family as the previous owners passed away. The friend is not a shooter which is how I ended up with it.
