Gye & Moncrieff Double Rifle Serial Number 1401, .577 x 500 Caliber, Black Powder; 26” steel (not Damascus) barrels, 14” L.O.P.; Drop at heel: 2.75”, Drop at comb: 1.75”; Weight: 10 lbs. With leather covered oak case, 20 rounds of loaded (90 gr. FFF) lead (350 gr.) bulleted cartridges, 8 rounds of jacketed HP (350 gr.) bulleted cartridges, as well as 29 empty casings (all Bertram brass). Also included is one set of RCBS Custom dies machined to this rifle's chamber specifications.
This double gun was made between 1875, when fluid steel became more available, and 1879, when the company was dissolved. It was a gun made for the African or "Colonial" trade, and was not a gun of “fancy” quality, since there is no engraving, and it originally sold from about 30 Pounds Sterling. This particular gun must have not seen much use, or was extremely well cared for. From an advertisement of the period: “…In addition to the above they build special Guns and Rifles for rough work, or for Colonial use at much lower prices, including particularly good reliable Double Express at L30…”. The gun has been test fired and is dead on at 50 yards.
The gun is in extremely good condition, with no rust or corrosion, and very good bores. The frame was high polished and is still silvery and the blue is still strong. The factory case is made especially for the gun, of leather covered oak, and felt lined, as pictures show. The left hand buckle strap has been mended, and we don't have a key for the lock. The forearm has been split and mended at some time. A brief history of the manufacturers is available.
We will consider trade for U.S. gold and silver coins at spot value, and may consider partial trade for some other guns, mostly lever Winchesters and Single Action Colts. We will also appreciate comments and any other information GunsAmerica members have to offer.
