This is a Newton First Series model 1916 rifle, chambered in the famed .256 cartridge. A clasic example of Charles Newtons highly advanced design, complete with the very rare, original bolt peep sight. Barrel is marked with caliber and "Newton Arms Co.-Buffalo, NY" on two lines.Serial # is 3487, marked on all appropriate parts. Stock is solid, well fitted, with diamond checkering in very good condition and appears to be original oil finish. Metal finish is excellent as is the whole condition of this gun. (Blueing is deep blue- so good in fact , it is suspect of being reblued)No signs of rust or pitting, or any stock repair. There are some very minor dings and surface wear, consistant with a rifle of this age. It has a shiney bore with strong rifling and mechanically it is excellent. Double set triggers, safety, extractor, take-down features, etc. are all in excellent working order. This rifle was the brainchild of well-known gun writer, designer and entrepeneur Charles Newton. It was made in limited quantities between 1916-1919. The rifle was incredibly advanced design for its day, and introduced features adopted by other makers years later such as: Interupted screw locking lugs,(Weatherby 1955) Bottom mounted, offset ejectors(Winchester M54-1928)Push button magrelease on trigger bow (Win.M70-1937) Flat -top receiver with rebated flat-top scope base & Low bolt handle with rotarysafety(Sako-1956)stock through-bolt connecting tang to grip cap (Ruger M77 1968) It has a unique take-down system with rotating mag floor plate, and patented double set trigger that is more reliable than the german style. The cartridge is based on a shortened and necked down.30-06 case. Reloading dies are readily available, and brass is easily formed from standard 30-06 cases. This Newton is a true piece of American gun history, and would be a classic addition to anyones collection.
