Notes: "In the early 1950's, Westerns were popular in both movies and television. Colt had discontinued their iconic Single Action Army prior to World War II, and few single-action revolvers were available to meet market demand for cowboy-style revolvers. Introduced in 1953, Sturm, Ruger & Company's first offering, the Ruger Single Six chambered in .22 Long Rifle, proved to be a very popular seller, leading Ruger to develop and market a center-fire revolver similar to the Colt Single Action Army: the Ruger Blackhawk. The Blackhawk replicated the size of the old Colt Single Action Army in both frame size and grip size. The Blackhawk also had adjustable sights mounted on a flat-top frame like many of the custom Colts and Colt Single Action target models. Ruger introduced the original Blackhawk in 1955, and the 1955–1962 Blackhawks are known today as the Flat-Top models because their adjustable rear sight was not protected by additional material at the back of the top strap, as later became standard. From 1962 through 1972, Ruger made the 'Three Screw' Blackhawk in various calibers, so called by the number of screws visible on the side of the revolver. The Flat-Top and Three Screw Rugers were modernized compared to the Colt Single Action Army, in that they had adjustable sights instead of the Colt's fixed sights, and they used wire coil springs instead of the Colt's flat leaf springs.

"The early models of the Blackhawk still operated like the Colts, in that the hammer was half-cocked to load and unload; also, the hammer rested on the firing pin against a round in the the chamber, making the firearm un-safe to carry with all six chambers loaded. Contrary to western movie myth, the old six-shooters were nearly always loaded with five rounds, and the hammer rested on the empty sixth chamber. In 1973, in order to eliminate accidents occurring from the hammer jarring against a round loaded in the sixth chamber, Ruger introduced the New Model Blackhawk. The New Model Blackhawk employed a transfer bar mechanism which prevented the hammer from resting on the firing pin, thus against the cartridge under the hammer, and prevented the round from being fired without the trigger being pulled; these changes also eliminated the need for the hammer to be half-cocked for loading and unloading. The same changes to the internal mechanism also did away with the classic 'multiple-clicks' sound of the Single-Action Army, made famous in the old westerns. Another result of the changes to the inner workings of the Blackhawk was that there were now only two screws on the side of the frame." (From several sources, compiled and adapted)
