Description: Also known as the Colt "1860 Original Metallic Cartridge First Model Richards," this pattern was more than just an assemblage of leftover Model 1860 Army Revolver parts. Rather, it was a combination of reworked old parts and new ones, all brought together as a revolver intended for use as a cartridge gun. Bearing serial number 52xx,the revolver is completely original from start to finish, serialized on the barrel, frame, grip strap, trigger guard, cylinder, and arbor. The assembly numbers appear on the barrel, ejector housing, arbor, frame, loading gate, and conversion ring. The gun carries a rich aged patina of plum blue on the factory refinish and the bore has some roughness, but with strong rifling president. The grips are bone from a bygone era, added many years ago, assumedly in the period of manufacture and use, together with an inlay on each panel of unknown material, perhaps silver, that closely resembles the handle of a spoon. One important note to the collector: The trigger guard is not brass. It is steel, an extremely rare variant, very seldom seen, and then only in the 5000 range of serial numbers, as this gun is. It's not every day that the opportunity arises to acquire a completely original (excepting the grips, of course), very good conditioned antique firearm, and in an ultra rare variation, to boot. Included in the price is an original, unopened, and factory sealed box of ammunition for this revolver. Called the "patent box of 1883" for the year in which this style of rounded-corner, plaid-bordered box of "central-fire" cartridges was introduced, it houses 50 of the caliber .44 Colt round designed specifically for the U.S. Richards conversion of the 1860 Army percussion revolver. The U.S. Richards was created at the Colt factory under contract with the U.S. Government for use by the Army on the Western frontier of America. This box, however, was not made for use in the U.S. Richards, but in the civilian version, termed the "1860 Original Metallic Cartridge First Model Richards," as pictured above. The box is in very good condition, showing only some shelf wear to the border and some very slight push from having other boxes stacked on top of it in a shipping box and being jostled about on a train or in a stagecoach en route to the mercantile from which it would be sold. Manufactured between 1883 and 1890, it is a rare box, especially in a sealed state, never opened, and in a caliber that became virtually obsolete by the very early 1900's.
