Here is a field tested specimen of the Chiappa Arms 1911 Clone. On its test, it gets a D score at best. It is manufactured, not in Germany or even in the Philippines, but in the honorable community of Dayton, Ohio. Manufacturer is Chiappa Firearms, Ltd. Dimensions and general appearance are very similar to the Government 1911 from 3-4 feet away. Weight is 33 ounces, and the feel is similar to the 1911. Grips are rosewood tinted hardwood, handsomely engraved and with the CF logo. Barrel is 5 inches with a protruding cast bushing, and disassembly is identical to the 1911, only much easier. Main Safety works like any 1911, but the Grip Safety is merely cosmetic and non-functional. Slide is desert Tan colorized. Front sight is matching colored Government type ramp, and appears to be stake-on. Rear sight is drift only adjustable black fixed, and appears to be made of pot metal, and the entire pistol pretty much appears to be pot metal. In fact, the only place a magnet will stick to is the barrel, the extractor, and the internal lock mounted in the right rear side of the slide. On a more positive note, the company used plastic only in making the magazine; even the trigger appears to be pot metal. We test fired this specimen with best results on Winchester X22LR ammunition. It fired 8 or 9 rounds out of 10 on Winchester, but never a magazine full without a stovepipe jam or failure to extract on at least one round. This is the second Chiappa we’ve had in our store, and the first one was brand new. The Brand New one didn’t do any better than this one, so this one is pretty much good as a new one. If a person wants a 1911 look alike for nostalgic purposes, and one that will shoot occasionally, this might be attractive. Note we said one that will shoot occasionally, not one to take shooting occasionally. The disassembly procedure on this one is quite easy, and might also be of value in learning assembly procedures for a real 1911. This is a locally owned specimen, bought new from one of our friendly competitors and traded in on a center fire pistol. Surface detractions are moderate, principally where the owner sanded the slide stop and safety surfaces after they lost some of their enamel finish. If, however, a person wants an inexpensive .22 pistol that is reliable and accurate, and one that feels and points very much like the original Government .45, then a person should buy a Ruger 22/45, one that is the same price as this Chiappa 1911-22, but one that actually will fire. And fire. And fire, and fire with any kind of ammo, and any amount of ammo, and will outshoot many folks' rifles.
