From its exclusive local West Tennessee owner comes this solid, attractive and nostalgic H&R Topper M158 Single Shot. Manufacturer was Harrington & Richardson, Inc., Worcester MA Plant. From its AH date code number, it was manufactured in 1971. Construction is steel metal, with polymer forend spacer and trigger guard; and with figured American Hardwood buttstock and forend. Chambering is .410 gauge, 2 1/2 inch and 3 inch shells interchangeably. Barrel is 28 inch old style tapered, with shoulder tapering in the chamber area, and .728 outside diameter at the forend and .510 osd at the muzzle. Bore diameter at the muzzle is .393. This shotgun is Not designed for slugs or for steel shot, lead or bismuth shot only is the way to go with it. Sight is plain brass bead front. Barrel has an ejector that will sling the shell or hull out. Release is right side receiver mounted. That part is southpaw friendly, and the buttstock is straight so this is an ambidextrous single shot. Buttstock length of pull is an adult 13 3/4 inches from the .335 smooth faced steel trigger to the end of the 3/4 inch factory red rubber recoil pad. Overall length is 43 inches; and weight empty is 5 pounds 10 ounces with center of gravity 2 inches forward of the breech face. Surface detractions on this H&R are moderate to extensive, principally its somewhat rough brown patina receiver with perhaps 15 percent original case color visible. Bluing is strong on the barrel, with extensive freckling that is not readily conspicuous. Wood scouring is moderate, with two sling brad holes on the pistol grip cap. We rate this Topper as Good, 65 to 70 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. We estimate this Topper has been fired fewer than 500 times. People usually don’t shoot .410s a whole lot, because the shells are too expensive. The idea is, to make that single shot count.
