This is an outstanding example of a .44 cal Philadelphia Derringer. It has a 2 ½” irregular barrel, blue/case hardened finish. Marked “MADE FOR/J.P.LOWER” on top of barrel, “WART/STEEL” on the upper right flat of the barrel, “SLOTTER /& Co. PHILa” on the lock plate and breechplug . The tiny brass front sight is set into the top flat of the barrel, the v-notch rear sight is part of the breechplug tang. All of the German silver mounts except the silver at the tip of the forearm are engraved with more coverage than normal. The finial of the triggerplate is engraved as a pineapple. There are some numbers stamped at the rear of the triggerguard but there are partial stampings and overstamps so it is not clear what is meant. The contour of the butt is much fuller than normal on a Slotter pistol, closer to the Henry Derringer contour.
Condition: Extremely Fine with 95% of the stripped blued finish on the barrel, 80% case hardening on the lock and the breechplug, but little color except around the hammer on the lock plate. Approximately 90% of the varnish remains on the very fine stock with a tight crack extending from the tip of the breechplug tang to the side plate. Mechanically excellent. The bore is excellent with a bright face to the breechplug.
