This comes from an estate in Iowa. The Great Grandfather was in the Ohio Volunteers, these were his items and have remained in the family all this time. Made by Springfield Armory, c. 1864-1865 (Type II). Total produced was about 255,040 for Type II. 40" round 58 caliber rifled barrel. Front sight doubles as lug for angular bayonet. Single leaf rear sight on Type II. Three solid barrel bands secured by flat springs mounted in the stock on Type II. Steel ramrod. Iron mountings. The Type II is the last regulation U.S. martial arm of muzzle-loading design. Sight on rifle is missing leaf and one side. This lot includes gun powder horn, shot bag, Rifle, bayonet and letter of provenance (copy of original by J. W. Chickering).
