This is a Cival War period “Final Model” Richardson Overman Breech Loading Carbine designed by Mahlon J. Gallager. Gallager was an inventor, born in Phila, moved to Savannah after meeting a 'southern belle'. He had his carbine mfg. back home by Richardson & Overman but they were mainly used in the South. The “Final Model” was contracted (5,000 produced) in March 1865 and delivered in May 1865 and was chambered for the Spencer 56-52 cartridge. It has a cartridge extractor and a firing pin design instead of a percussion nipple. Many of the “Final Model” carbines were bought by France and used in the Franco-Prussian War. It is a single shot design where the barrel moves forward to load and has a 22 1/4 inch round barrel. The serial number is 21587. Although many of these models were converted to other calibers, shotguns ,etc, this example is all original. Less than 25,000 Gallager Carbines of all designs were ever produced. This piece is in excellent condition with the metal turning to a very nice patina. There are no cracks or other damage other than minor handling marks to the wood. The bore is also excellent with strong sharp rifling. As can seen in the photographs the sling ring bar had been removed sometime in the past. Not many of these Carbines have survived in this condition. Buyer to pay $35 for shipping and insurance. It is an antique and therefore no FFL license is required for transfer but need proof of age over 21. No sales tax for out of state purchasers but New York State residents are required to pay 7% sales tax. I have a walk in Gun Shop so I reserve the right to remove this item from auction if there are no bids and I have a local buyer
