Description: Here is a very real Cowboy Colt Single Action Army revolver used in Texas after the turn of the last century. This is a 4.75” barrel, standard grips, in .38/40 caliber. It was born in 1904 (serial #255xxx) and shipped to Simmons Hardware, St. Louis, Missouri, with 39 other guns, on July 23rd of that year. Sometime later, it found its way into the possession of Phillip Elbert Klapper (1907 to 1974), in or around Childress, Texas. He was a young working cowboy who also did some rodeos. He worked on one or more ranches, near Childress in Cottle, Motley and/or Hardeman Counties, whose cattle carried the HC brand. He is buried in the Goodlett Cemetary, Wheatland, Hardeman County, Texas.

There are a number of marks on the Colt which bear mentioning as follows: The stamping “P. E. Klapper” on the right side of the frame; What looks to be “PHILL” on the butt; On the bottom of both grips is a group of five punches in the arrangement one would find five dots on a die; This five punch also shows up on the left frame above the trigger; There is a line of dots down the center of the top strap; On the inside of the right grip are scratched “IT” and “E” in different locations; The inside of the left grip has “WIT” legibly, and very faintly under that appears to be “Hooker”. There are some other illegible faint marks which might be “los rios”, but that’s a stretch, even using my imagination. The grips appear to be original to the gun, particularly because of the “five dot” stamp. They are well used, and the right one is mended. It also has a small mother of pearl inlay on the edge of the Colt Oval. All I can do is wonder…… The front sight appears to be replaced as it is thicker than normal - possibly nickel silver.

The holster accompanying the Colt has apparently been with it since Young Mr. Klapper had it. It is a vintage H. H. Heiser style #413 double loop variety with the HC (connected) brand carved on the face of it.

These sorts of markings were most apt to be done by young men or boys, who were proud of their gun, or bored, and thought to personalize it. It is not common for Colts to actually be tied to specific areas, states or counties, much less specific people. This is great chance for a collector to own one of these extremely sought after pieces. The Colt's Archives letter is also included.
