A short-throw lever operated a three-lug rotating bolt, rounds were fed vertically from a detachable box magazine. This "bolt-action" feature in a "lever-action" allowed for the use of high-powered modern short-case cartridges with spitzer bullets. The Model 88 is the third largest selling lever action rifle in Winchester's production history.
