THIS IS AN UNUSUAL AND FINE EXAMPLE OF A VERY EARLY MODEL 1795 SPRINGFIELD ARMORY MADE MUSKET. UNLIKE LATER GUNS, WHICH WERE STOCKED WITH WALNUT, THIS EARLY GUN IS STOCKED WITH CHERRY WOOD. THE STOCK IS COMPLETE WITH NO MISSING WOOD. NOR ARE THERE ANY CRACKS AND REPAIRS. THE WRIST AND COMB STYLE RESEMBLE THE BRITISH SHORT LAND PATTERN, RATHER THAN THE LATER FRENCH CHARLEVILLE STYLE. THE SURFACE OF THE WOOD APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN COATED WITH A SLIGHTLY DARKEN OIL TO ENHANCE IT'S APPEARANCE. THE BARREL IS 44 9/16" LONG WITH AN EXCELLENT .69 CALIBER BORE. THE EXTERIOR SURFACE OF THE BARREL IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AND IS STILL IN THE WHITE IN HIDDEN AREAS. THERE ARE NO WRENCH MARKS ON THE BREECH PLUG. CONSIGNER HAD THE BARREL XRAYED IN THE BREECH AREA. IT WAS FOUND TO BE IN IT'S ORIGINAL FLINT CONFIGURATION, WITH NO EVIDENCE OF RECONVERSION FROM THE PERCUSSION MODE. THE ONLY MARKINGS ON THE BARREL IS THE LETTER P, WHICH IS STAMPED AT THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BREECH. SINCE THIS PRECEDES THE OFFICIAL 1797 GOVERNMENT PROOF PATTERN, THE P COULD STAND FOR EITHER "PROVED" OR PERHAPS "PHILADELPHIA", AS AN ARMORY AT PHILADELPHIA WAS IN OPERATION, WELL BEFORE SPRINGFIELD. THE LOCK IS ALL ORIGINAL AND IS A PERFECT FIT TO THE WOOD, BOTH INSIDE AND OUT. THE FLASH PAN SHOWS USE WITH FINE LIGHT PITTING. THE FRIZZEN SPRING, WHILE THE SIZE AND FORM OF THE 1795 PATTERN, HAS VERY PROFESSIONAL AND ARTISTIC DECORATIVE FILE WORK FROM THE PERIOD, MORE IN KEEPING WITH SPORTING GUN WORKMANSHIP, RATHER THAN THE PLAIN WORKMANSHIP ONE SEES IN LATTER MILITARY PRODUCTION GUNS. ALL OF THE LOCK SCREWS ARE OF THE PERIOD WHITWORTH THREAD FORM, WITH ROUND TOP AND BOTTOM ON THREADS. THE LOCK PLATE EXHIBITS EARLY FEATURES, SUCH AS THE ELONGATED TAIL, PARTIAL CHICKEN EAGLE STAMP AND VERTICAL SPRINGFIELD STAMP. THE INSIDE OF THE LOCK IS STAMPED TC, WHICH IS THE MARK OF TENCHE COX, A TRAVELING GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR OF SMALL ARMS DURING THE PERIOD. UNLIKE LATER GUNS, THERE ARE NO BATCH ASSEMBLY MARKS OF ANY KIND ON THIS GUN. ALL OF THESE EARLY AND NON PRODUCTION FEATURES SUGGESTS THAT THIS MODEL 1795 MAY BE A PRE PRODUCTION PROTOTYPE, MADE BY A VERY EXPERIENCED GUNSMITH, RATHER THAN BEING THE PRODUCT OF SEVERAL INDIVIDUALS ENGAGED IN LATER AND LARGER PRODUCTION OPERATIONS. OVERALL, THIS IS A COMPLETE AND ORIGINAL, FINE EXAMPLE OF A MODEL 1795 SPRINGFIELD ARMORY MUSKET, IN WONDERFUL OUTSTANDING CONDITION... AS THIS IS A LATE 18TH CENTURY FLINTLOCK FIREARM. IT CAN BE EXPORTED TO MOST COUNTRIES...HOWEVER, IF YOU ARE AN INTERNATIONAL BIDDER, PLEASE DO CHECK WITH YOUR IMPORT AUTHORITIES BEFORE BIDDING...
