LG1143 From the collection of our favorite Irish cousin here in West Tennessee comes this very attractive Savage Stevens Model 15-A Single Shot Rifle with 23 inch main barrel. We say main barrel, because the entire barrel and receiver group is one piece of forged, milled steel. Trigger group and bolt assembly are fitted into the rear of the action, and the cocking mechanism is the classic knurled knob on the rear end of the bolt. The operator did not draw the knob back until he or she was ready to fire, and that was the extent of its safety features. Mechanism is also take-down, easily disassembled by means of the thumb-friendly slotted knurled action screw. Stock is American Walnut, with no buttplate, exactly as it was manufactured. Length of pull is a youth-friendly 12 7/8 inches from the serrated steel trigger face to the concave on the butt end of the one piece stock. Sights are factory blue steel blade front with step elevator rear. This rifle was never serialized; none of the 15s or 15-As were until 1969. Production on the 15 and 15A ran from the early 1930s until 1971. Chambering is for .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle, and the barrel is so marked. From the G Armorer’s mark on the barrel behind the rear sight, this Savage Stevens 15A was manufactured in 1955, and that accords with the age of its owner. Stock finish is original style plain oil, and the barrel and receiver surfaces are down to a very nice brown patina gun metal gray. Some original bluing is intact around the barrel lettering, full on the sights, and on the bolt body. Stock detractions are minimal, only occasional scouring. We rate this little .22 as Good on account of the metal finish. The evenness of the metal coloration and strength of the stock condition perhaps demand Very Good status. Photos, at rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. This Savage Stevens is Excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent.
