This is a Mauser Karabiner Model 98k, from 1942, made in the Mauser Foundry. This is indicated by an engraving on the top of the receiver. The mark is "byf". All numbers match. The bolt, the receiver, the stock, and the smaller parts are all marked 477. In addition, the rifle is marked with the wartime German eagle.
I rate this rifle's condition as excellent, considering that it is seventy years old. There is no real sign of use or that this rifle was ever in service. The barrel is shiny, and the mechanics, including the two stage trigger, are nearly perfect. With that said, to make this rifle truly exquisite, it could be re-blued, and the stock could be re-finished.
This rifle demonstrates the fine craftsmanship Mauser was capable of, and is an excellent representation from the era before wartime shortages resulted in aesthetic compromises.
