From its A700,000 range serial number, this Smith & Wesson model 459 was manufactured in President Reagan’s Inaugural Year of 1981. The 459 set the standard for lightweight Wonder Nine pistols in the 1980s; garbage-mouthed guns that will feed any kind of ammo, from sharp-nosed Federal hollowpoints to lead bullet reloads to steel case Russian and Chinese rounds. Notable competitors Glock and Sig to this day do not share this pistol’s omnivorous diet, thirty years later. This pistol comes from a long time civilian residency in Lorain County, Ohio, with both its original steel plate 14 shot magazines, legal for civilian possession in New York because they are pre-ban. Barrel is 4 inch steel; weight empty 30 ounces; traditional double action semi-auto pistol with left side / right-hand shooter decocking safety; firing pin safety and magazine safety; gloss checkered polymer factory grips; .365 smooth face blue steel combat trigger with matching .265 serrated hammer; windage and elevation adjustable rear sights protected by Smith & Wesson’s distinctive 39/59 series sight shoulders; gloss serrated polymer mainspring housing in a lightweight gloss black anodized alloy frame with serrated front strap; full length steel guide rod. This specimen is a well tended department pistol. Surface detractions are moderate: edge whitening, more pronounced near the muzzle and sides of the trigger guard; and occasional freckling to the blue steel slide. We rate it as Good to Very Good, 75 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any right, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves.
