L.C. Smith Field Grade 20ga. - AS NEW, 6LB. LIGHTWEIGHT, NICE!
There are a good many Field Grade 20 gauge doubles for sale out there, many of them offered for less than this gun, serial number 613xx made in 1923. You will find most of them to be well worn, with cracks, pads, little finish remaining, and most all of them will be heavy for gauge as most Elsies are at around 6 1/2 lbs. or more. Every once in a while we are lucky to find one of the delightful, feather light, small bore L.C. Smith guns that put a smile on one's face. This is one of those guns, weighing 6lbs. even and balanced just ahead of the hinge pin, what a delight! Fully restored wood and metal, all original factory parts, mechanically excellent; ready to rock your shooting world this fall in the field or on the clays course. It is hard to find a gun to buy that has it all and needs no work or tweaking. The cost of this restoration would exceed what we want for the whole gun! A gun you can use and enjoy, and will increase in value over time.
The 26" barrels retain 99% blue, excellent bores, no dents, pits or scratches, 2 1/2 " chambers (chambers and cones can be lengthened to 2 3/4" for $140 to reduce recoil and improve patterns but not required to do in order to shoot 2 3/4" shells. If you do not know why, ask), choked SK/LM (.003/.014 restrictions), .612 bore diameter both barrels, minimum barrel wall thickness 32 thou right, 40 thou left, ribs tight, barrels tight on breech face and hinge like a new gun, a great set of barrels.
The feather weight sidelock action retains 100% vivid case colors, good screws, action tight with lever well right of center, extractors, crisp double triggers, 100% trigger guard blue, stripped, inspected, and properly lubricated when case color hardened, all in mechanically excellent condition.
The factory wood retains 98% new finish, excellent checkering, great wood to metal fit, 13 3/4" LOP to factory butt plate, 13 9/16" LOP to the end of wood (can add a pad to get to 14 1/2" LOP for $135 within 7 days of purchase), 2 1/2" drop at heel, 1 1/2" drop at comb, neutral cast (can be bent to your specs within 14 days of purchase). The drop at heel and comb are nice, modern dimensions. We have genuine Hawkins pads from the 1920's, NOT REPRODUCTIONS, that we install on these Elsies. That is what the factory used and installation is done to perfection by Vintage Firearms, Inc.
The L.C. Smith double shotguns are growing in popularity and are the vintage American double slated to gain value more than all the others, in my opinion. The Parker guns are at their pinnacle; still gaining but tapering off. Fox enjoyed a major spike in value over the last 5 years, and deservedly so. Now with the advent of the L.C. Smith Collectors Association and the competitive side by side shoots occurring nationwide, the L.C. Smith is surging in demand as it should. It is the only commercially successful American sidelock shotgun, with a strong simple action and good proportions and aesthetics.
There are more photos upon request. There is a 30 day mechanical warranty on this gun. Please see my other fine VINTAGE FIREARMS on this website. Just click on the line in the ad that says “see all items from this seller” and a list of collectible and sporting arms will appear. I have over 100 guns not yet listed, so ask if you don’t see what you are after. Thanks for looking!
