From its ADW serial number prefix, this Smith & Wesson .357 Distinguished Combat Magnum Stainless, numbered model 686, was manufactured in President Reagan’s Reelection Year of 1984. It has no model suffix, and it has not been stamped with the M digit from the mid-1980s firing pin bushing modification. This is a thoroughly traditional 686, with true square butt grip frame serrated fore and aft, with White Outline rear adjustable sights, Red Ramp front sight, .400 satin stainless serrated semi-target hammer and .265 smooth combat satin stainless trigger. Grips are decade correct Pachmayr SK-Gripper Professionals. Its only surface detractions are faint occasional holster buffing. We rate it as Excellent, since no more than 10 percent of its surfaces exhibit any contact indications by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, should suffice for prospective owners to judge finish grade for themselves. This 686 is Excellent mechanically. Bore, cylinder chambers, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Blast effect to the under side of the frame top strap directly above the barrel’s forcing cone is negligible, no etching or cutting whatsoever. This is a civilian owned revolver and it simply has not been fired more than 20 rounds with magnum loads. Timing is exceptional. Double action trigger pull is very stiff but consistent, and the hammer travels a full 15 degrees on all six positions after the cylinder times into place. On single action, the hammer travels fully 30 degrees on all six after the cylinder times, and the single action trigger pull is a stiff but original and crisp 4 3/8 pounds. This revolver has not been altered at all. Lateral movement of the cylinder is negligible with the trigger relaxed, no more than 1/2 mm total by our estimate; and with the trigger fully depressed there is no lateral movement whatsoever. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap is a perfect tight .007, gauged from the right side. We are including a new replacement factory blue box and factory lock with this 686; the correct box, of course, would be a two piece. We’re offering this outstanding Reagan Era, fully traditional 686 for only $ 649.95.
