While we do not have serialization on Savage or Stevens shotguns, this one’s number is 371xxB. This is a Montgomery Wards contract Western Field variant of the Stevens model 520A. The model was introduced in 1927, and took the place of the 520. Both are John M. Browning original designs, distinctive because of the square aperture in the top of the receiver where the bolt locks into place. This one is a well used specimen that we estimate was manufactured some time in the 1930s, a 12 gauge with 28 inch Modified Choke Barrel whose muzzle constriction measures .705. Wards did not have a model number put on this variant, but Fjiestad shows it as model 025 in his book. Buttstock and forend are original, old refinishes with weak checkering, and the buttstock has damage on the right side of its pistol grip, as the photos show. Length of pull is 13 1/2 inches, down about an inch from the original length, we believe. Forend wood has a hairline crack where the slide bar joins, on the left side. Metal is smooth gun metal gray, with perhaps 10 percent of the bluing remaining. This old Wards Satevens appears mechanically sound, and the bore and chmber are bright and clean. This shotgun comes to us from the estate of a Wildersville / Parker’s Crossroads Tennesse farmer who probably bought it new in the 1920s when he made a good cotton crop. This shotgun, the Stevens 520 and 520A, did not have the longevity or collectability of their more expensive Winchester counterparts; they are, however, distinctive and well designed guns, brought into existence by the master himself, John M. Browning. Own it for only $ 179.00 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> $20 flat fee lower 48 states; $50 Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico, UPS Ground with full insurance coverage.
