Here is the most traditional variant of Smith & Wesson’s .38 Centennial Airweight introduced in the Company’s Centennial Year of 1952, a popular product descended from the experimental Air Crewman all-aluminum revolver of the early 1950s. This is the numbered model 442-2 without internal lock. Manufacturer is Smith & Wesson of Springfield, MA. Factory sku is 150544. Barrel, cylinder and parts are all steel, integrated into a lightweight aluminum alloy frame, hence the 15 ounce light weight empty, down from 20-21 ounces for the steel J frame Smith & Wessons. Cylinder capacity is 5 rounds of .38 Smith & Wesson Special and .38 Special +P ammunition interchangeably. Frame is J Magnum type, capable of withstanding +P ammo pressure. Center of gravity is at the trigger. The Centennial was introduced as a pocket revolver. Since its hammer is completely encased in the frame, there is no possibility of clothing snagging from a hammer spur. Action, then, is double action only; there is no way for the hammer to stand in single action. A distinct advantage to the Centennial is that an alarmed, armed homeowner will not be able to cock the revolver into single action when he or she hears a noise; but a steady deliberate pull of the trigger will fire the revolver with more certainty than any automatic ever produced. The .312 smooth faced combat trigger pulls at 13 pound vicinity double action with 7/8 inch trigger travel. Smith & Wesson revolvers all have an internal transfer bar safety to guard against accidental discharge. This 442-2 does NOT have any internal lock. The combat finger grooved rubber boot grips allow a firm hold as possible with no increase of the overall height or size of the small J grip frame. Chambering is .38 Smith & Wesson Special caliber; cylinder holds 5 rounds of .38 Special and .38 Special +P interchangeably. Finish is matte blue barrel, cylinder, rod and screws, with matching matte black anodized finish to the alloy frame. Maximum overall length is 6 1/4 inches from the muzzle to the grip frame curve; 4 1/4 inches high, and with a lateral thickness of only 1.3 inches, comparable to the slide thickness on many semi automatics that are more complicated and less reliable. More than any other firearm, a double action revolver will only fire when its operator intends for it to. Each revolver comes in its factory box with protective papers, instruction manual, red cable lock, fired brass envelope, NRA enrollment form, and factory registration card. Replacement price on these revolvers is now upwards of $600.00 in our area, if a person can even find one.
