This is a very rare model 1896 Remington Rolling block in 7mm Mauser. Layman has stated in his book about Remington Military Rolling block rifles that he believes less than 1,100 we made in total. The identifying charcteristic for the M1896 is the front sight which is vastly superior to the sights on the later versions (M1897, 1901, and 1910). The bore is a little dark but the rifle shoots very well in my limited experince with it. I loaded Sierra GK's over IMR 4064 and had 5-rounds go into less than 1.5 inches at 100 yards. The stocks are not perfect and in fact the left side of the butstock appears to be "trench art". Someone has carved what appears to be a tree on the side. The stock is of course easy to replace since it is the same as the M1897 stock and can be purchased for a minimal price. Most of the finsih is gone. There is a very small amount of rust pitting on the rear sight and under it on the barrel but really not bad. Were I to keep the rifle I would repalce the sight, again easy to get since it was also used on the M1897.
I am selling this so I can obtain a more common M1897 to use as the basis of a new project, hate to take apart an uncommon rifle.
There will be an additional 5% added for California sales to offset my aggravation with California's elected officials
