From its original family of ownership, from the owner’s estate, comes this still attractive specimen of Marlin’s model 99M1 rifle, immediate ancestor to the Model 60. Its principal detraction is the Country Gunsmith repair job on the buttstock, right side of the pistol grip area, complete with dowel pins that go completely through the stock. The smith did a pretty good job of the repair, the surfaces are smooth, and if it cracks again, it won’t happen on that area. Our technician Mr. Frye has applied three coats of Tru-Oil to the Walnut. Other detractions are moderate, graying and finish loss to the anodized front sight strap, receiver, and trigger guard; and freckling to the barrel surfaces. We rate it as Good, perhaps Very Good, 70 percent vicinity, not counting the repairs. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. This specimen has the year of production as the serial number prefix, 72 for 1972. Manufacturer was Marlin Firearms of New Haven, CT, part of a run that lasted from 1959 until 1978. Type is blowback action semi-automatic rimfire rifle. Capacity is 10 rounds, 10+1, of .22 Long Rifle caliber High Velocity ammunition. Construction is steel barrel, band, and internal parts; brass body short magazine tube; alloy front sight assembly, receiver, and trigger guard; and American Walnut buttstock and barrel cover. Barrel is 18 inch 1:16 Micro-Groove. Safety is pushbutton type behind the trigger guard, right handed shooter. Length of pull is 13 3/4 inches from the trigger face to the center of the buttplate. Overall length is 36 1/2 inches, and weight empty is 4 pounds 11 ounces with center of gravity under the breech face. Sight is new replacement, but generally period correct, Williams #54 Aperture or Peep sight. This rifle’s bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent, and we cycled 10 rounds of mixed ammunition through it with no hitches. Replacement pricing on an excellent condition 99M1 often exceeds $300.
