Description: Here is an earlier specimen of the 311 type shotgun marketed so long and so successfully by Savage Arms. Gun model is 5100, stamped on the right side of the receiver. It was never serialized, and armorers marks are C N F on the water table of the receiver. Since the C is encircled, we take that for the date code, 1951 manufacture. This nice old Savage comes to us from the estate of one of our Tennessippi Agriculture Scientists. He was a rather meticulous chemical engineer, and maintained his firearms very, very well until his fatal illness a couple of years ago. Barrel coloration has strong original bluing with some whitening on the muzzle edges and brown toning on the sides of the tubes, the handling point. Original casehardened coloration is strong as well on the receiver, but with extensive spotty brown toning. Note that one spring retaining screw has been replaced with a mismatch on the right side receiver. Buttstock has substantial residue of the original glossy finish, and note the custom recess atop the comb that allowed the owner to get down on the bead sight better. Recoil pad is red 1950s XO Pachmayr, and the length of pull is a dead 14 inches for the rear trigger face to the end of the pad. We detect three hairline cracks behind the receiver, two on the right side and one on the left, all of them about an inch long but with no visible separation. These are easily remedied for about $50 if separation begins. Forend has some glossy finish left, but also extensive light scouring. We rate this 5100 Savage-Springfield as Very Good, since only about 20 percent of its surfaces are affected by age and handling in our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for prospective owners to judge finish grade for themselves. Note that both forend and buttstock are original American Walnut. This shotgun is Excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. We’re offering it for only $ 389.95.
