Swiss 96/11 Walnut Loaded with History!
This is a 96/11 (1896/1911) Schmidt-Rubin, the first iteration of the famous 1895 straight pull design. Built in full rifle length these are among the most accurate bolt action military rifles ever produced by anyone on this planet. This specific rifle was produced sometime in 1897, in a time so long ago it congers visions of real men and their firearms. All of the metal serial numbers match, magazine, receiver, bolt, the stock and handguard mismatched. The bore is very good to excellent, as in with a good cleaning she should tune up to NRA Excellent or NRA Fine condition. This rifle was rebuilt in 1911, a new barrel (the old one could not withstand the pressure of the modern cartridge) was added along with some other improvements. The stock has a pistol grip worked in, no cracks or gouges, only a few dings, the finish is original and is in NRA Very Good condition. The bluing is even, and about 85%+.
In 1913, as a result of a decree signed on January 13, 1911, conversion of 1896-type rifles to approximate to the 1911 pattern began in the Eidgenoessische Waffenfabrik. By March 1, 1920, 135,770 rifles had been altered. They had four-groove rifling and chambered the Ordonnanz 11 cartridge.
As might be expected, this model markedly resembled the Model 1911 Rifle, some of the differences being:
rounded buttplate on the M96/11, flat on the M11.
pistol grip worked into the stock on the M96/11, integral to the stock on the M11.
cutouts on the bottom of the receiver for older magazines on the M96/11, none on the M11.
slightly differently shaped trigger guard on the M96/11 than on the M11.
This rifle belonged to Josfe Schmed, well that is what the name tag on the butt plate indicates. From what we can tell, he took good care of this rifle. Ol' Josfe may still be out their, it might be fun to contact him and ask him about the particulars of this beautiful rifle. 96/11 rifles in this condition are very hard to come by, don't let Josfe's rifle pass by.
