Here is a well made Italian replica of the 19th Century Zouave Rifles in a carbine length. This specimen bears similarities to the Cook & Brother, Murray, and Enfield Carbines used by the Confederates, but it is a Zouave type, and few if any Zouave Rifles were used during the Civil War. Manufacturer is Antonio Zoli Company of Italy. Importer was Hy-Score Arms of Brooklyn NY, a substantial importer during the 1970s. From the XXX date code, it was manufactured in 1974. Barrel is 26 inch blued steel, .58 Minie Ball Percussion caliber. Full length 1863 Zouaves have 33 inch barrels. Hammer and lock plates are color casehardened, with steel trigger, blue steel screws and sling swivels and trigger. Furniture and front sight are solid brass. Rear sight is dovetailed square black with step elevator. Stock assembly is original Italian walnut. This rifle comes to us from the Collection of an Ohio Southern sympathizer. Note that the stock has been repaired on both sides near the wedge pin escutcheons, and we do not see any ongoing signs of separation. Stock shows moderate amounts of scouring, but metal is excellent throughout. Final 3 digits of the 4 digit serial number were overstamped at the factory, before the barrel was even blued. We rate this Muzzleloader as Very Good, 80 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It is certainly excellent mechanically. Bore and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Its owner informed us he had never used more than 65 grains of FFG in a load on his .58s. Replacement pricing on similar, current production carbines from our friends at Dixie Gun Works and elsewhere approach $1,000 apiece.
