Description: Here is a specimen of the last variant of the highly popular Smith & Wesson .357 Combat Magnum Stainless, numbered model 66, seventh engineering change, from July of 2004, given its CJN serial number prefix. Type is double- and single-action revolver; stainless steel construction on S&W’s reinforced Magnum style K frame that is factory drilled to accept optic mounts on top of the frame; 6 shot cylinder capacity; caliber .38 Special and .357 Magnum interchangeably; 2 1/2 inch two-piece barrel; entire stainless main construction; .312 smooth faced combat MIM case colored with matching .375 semi-target serrated flat faced hammer; transfer bar internal safety system with floating firing pin; pinned-in anodized Red Ramp front sight, with rounded anodized white outline adjustable rear sights; weight 33 1/4 ounces empty; smooth surface round butt grip frame with strain screw trigger adjustment. All 66-7 revolvers, of course, come with Smith & Wesson’s patented internal lock system and two keys as the photos show. This specimen comes from an international trade, where the Australian Wildlife Services went modern and equipped themselves with new M&P autos. We think the Aussies made a bad trade, but we’re glad we got this 2 1/2 inch round butt 66. Surface detractions are moderate, with moderate scouring here and there on the stainless surfaces that have been dimmed by easily performed touch-up refinishing. There is also some whitened wear on the hammer and rear sight edges. We rate it as Very Good, since no more than 20 percent of its surfaces are affected by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for prospective owners to judge finish grade for themselves. It is Excellent mechanically. Blast effect to the under side of the frame top strap is negligible, only a faint short streak in the center of the top strap, no etching much less cutting. This revolver has simply had few or no magnum rounds fired through it. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent, and the hammer travels an additional 5 degrees on all six positions after the cylinder times in double action. On single action, the hammer travels 15 degrees after the cylinder times on all six; and the single action trigger pull is a crisp original 4 pounds. Bore, cylinder chambers and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Lateral play to the cylinder is minimal with the trigger relaxed, less than 1mm total; and with the trigger fully depressed no more than 1/2 mm.Cylinder face to forcing cone gap is a very tight .004, and this helps explain the absence of blast effect to the top strap. We do not detect any endshake at all on this revolver. Grips are current production replacement Pachmayr Grippers, SK/GR, by far the best looking and best pointing grips on the market. We are furnishing this 66-7 in a current production Smith & Wesson blue factory case with instruction manual and a California Compliant cable lock to supplement its internal lock. Replacement pricing on the nearest thing in production nowadays, the much heavier 2 1/2 inch model 686, is well over $800 in our area. We’re offering this classy, eminently serviceable 66-7 Stainless, however, for only $ 539.95. Transferable to civilians in all jurisdictions of the United States of America. God bless Mr. Otis McDonald!
