According to its AJT serial number prefix, this .357 Military & Police Heavy Barrel Stainless was manufactured in late summer of President Reagan's Second Inaugural Year, 1985. It is a fully traditional model 65, third engineering change, with the Satin Stainless hammer and smooth .312 Satin Stainless Combat Trigger. Grip frame is true square butt. This is a service revolver, of course; and it has normal handling detractions to its surface. These detractions, however, have been substantially subdued by polishing. Light scouring and pecking is mainly concentrated on the side plate and right side of the frame, with similar scours and light pecks on the edges and bottom of the trigger guard, here and there. Matte area atop the barrel and frame have undergone some buffing, but matte texture is still strong. Extreme rear edges of the frame proper has small amounts of light surface pitting, and there is another small spot on the left side of the frame above the rear trigger guard juncture. The new replacement but period correct Pachmayr SK-GP grips conceal most of these areas. We rate this revolver as Very Good, since we estimate that 80 to 85 percent of its finish is free of detractions; but photos should suffice for interested parties to judge finish grade for themselves. It is Excellent mechanically. Blast effect to the under side of the frame top strap directly above the barrel's forcing cone is minimal, a faint shallow etchy crease that traverses about 1/2 of the width of the top strap. Lateral play to the cylinder is minimal, less than 1 mm total movement by our estimate, with the trigger relaxed; with the trigger pulled all the way, total lateral movement is less than 1/2 mm. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent, and the hammer travels an additional 10 degrees after the cylinder times in all six positions on double action. On single action, the hammer travels a full 25 to 30 degrees on all six after the cylinder times, and the single action trigger pull is a crisp original 4 pounds. Bore and cylinder chambers are bright, clean, and excellent. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap is an above average .010, but this confirms that this revolver has been fired very little with Magnum rounds, attest the lack of blast effect to the top strap. This is a very well constructed, eminently serviceable, attractive and collectable Siegler / Reagan Era Smith & Wesson Magnum.
