Here is one of the last laminated stock varmint rifles to come off the Howa Assembly line. This is Howa’s 1500 Varminter chambered in the effective .243 Winchester Caliber. Manufacturer was Howa Machinery Company Ltd of Kiyosu, Japan. We’ve known Howa Quality for 40 years now, beginning with their Smith & Wesson 1500 Rifles, and continuing with Weatherby’s Vanguard series. Importer is currently Legacy Sports of Las Vegas. Type is bolt action high powered rifle, with internal magazine and steel pivoting floor plate. Barrel is 24 inch heavy .835 at the muzzle and .900 at the forend outside diameter. Bore is 6 groove button rifled with 1:12 right hand twist. Chambering is .243 Winchester caliber, capacity 4 + 1 rounds. Metal finish is blued steel, including the bolt body. Trigger is .275 serrated face steel, adjustable but on its original 3 1/2 pound factory setting, two stage with no felt creep or overtravel. Stock is factory Howa, attractive, strong, and weather resistant laminate with ported barrel area and thumb hold. Length of pull measures 14 inches from the trigger face to the end of the 1/2 inch factory recoil pad. Weight empty is 9 1/2 pounds. This Howa comes in its original box with its plastic wrapper, 7 inch bipod, factory instruction manual and never executed factory registration card, and blue steel swivels already installed. Surface detractions are minimal, only a series of small pecks around the butt area of the stock and on the edge of the pistol grip area. Metal does now show any wear. We rate this Vanguard as Excellent and unfired in box, 90 to 95 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. Bolt face does not have any brass residue. Trigger is on its original 5 pound setting. Original brass filler screws appear undisturbed, and we see no evidence that a scope base was ever put on this rifle. It comes to us with a few other long guns from a Louisiana dealer liquidation. We do not believe it was ever scoped, loaded, fired, or transferred. Replacement pricing for similar rifles like the Howa Axiom approaches $800, and they’re ugly as sin. This is a good looking rifle.
