SERIOUS FOX COLLECTORS
So why the proclamation “SERIOUS FOX COLLECTORS”? Building a meaningful collection of any firearm involves finding guns with historically important and unusual features. The uniqueness of this particular gun is it is probably one of the first Sterlingworth Deluxe guns produced, and the stampings on the barrel are notable and unique.
McIntosh notes in his book “A.H. Fox ‘The Finest Gun In the World” on page 280 that a “few guns” were marked “BUILT FOR SAVAGE ARMS CORP. BY A.H. FOX GUN CO.” during the transition in 1929/1930. This gun has the stamping “AN A.H. FOX GUN MADE FOR SAVAGE ARMS CORP, UTICA, NY, USA”. I have seen the first inscription mentioned by McIntosh on a rare occasion, but have never seen this stamping before. That is a very collectible feature in the history of the Fox shotgun, and one that is worth a few dollars more to add to your collection. It is a RARE feature.
Serial number 367024, date of manufacture at 1930 or so, gun was produced as a “Sterlingworth Deluxe” with double ivory beads and a recoil pad. The gun has all Philadelphia features, the “STERLINGWORTH” stamping on the sides of the receiver instead of the “FOX STERLINGWORTH” that is found on Savage guns. This along with the barrel stampings makes it a true “transition gun”, and one of historical significance.
Barrels are 28”, mirror bores, 2 9/16” chambers, #3 weight, choked M/M (.018/.019). Some would call that F/F, ring like chimes and ribs are tight, original barrel blue is 96%, extractors, handling marks, lettering clear and sharp, tight on breech face and hinge with no wiggle, double ivory beads, internal bore diameter of .662.
The receiver retains 50% original case color, exc. screws, double triggers, 60% trigger guard blue, action tight on face with lever way right of center, Philly stampings.
The wood shows some use, with good clear checkering, , wood to metal fit is real nice, LOP 14 1/4” to period pad, length of pull to the end of wood is 13 ¼”, drop at heel 3 1/8”, drop at comb 1 ¾”, all original finish and numbered to the gun, gun weighs 6 1/4lbs., balances just forward of the hinge pin. A wonderful handling gun for upland hunting or clays. I can restore the wood properly for $300, can clean up the pad in the process as well. That would make it a very nice looking gun and not hurt its collector value. If you want chokes or chambers altered, I have an excellent gunsmith that can do that for you as well. A great piece of history for the Fox nut.
Three day inspection does not include firing or screw driver disassembly. Full refund minus shipping costs only if returned in the same condition as shipped. Please see my other Vintage Firearms on this website. More pictures are available of this gun, just ask. Thanks for looking!
