This rather diminutive revolver, a smaller brother to the .36 caliber 1851 Navy, enjoyed the largest unit sales volume in the history of Colt's percussion line. Indeed, no other percussion revolver made in America could match the production record of the 1849 Pocket. The weapon was actually manufactured from 1850 through 1873---325,000 in America and 11,000 in London. Barrel length varied from 3" to 6", cylinders were five, or six shot, trigger guards were round, and all of the many variations were .31 caliber. Popular as a defense weapon, the 1849 Pocket sold in the many thousands to Western pioneers, and soldiers appreciated the compact little weapons. Period photographs of Civil War troops often show the 849 Pocket tucked into belts or holsters.
