Mossberg’s 500 series Chassis was so durable that it easily lengthened and strengthened into the model 535 a decade ago, capable of handling any 12 gauge shell, from rifled slugs to buckshot to 3 1/2 inch Magnums. Here is a pristine Mossberg 535 Turkey Thug. Manufacturer is O.F. Mossberg & Sons of New Haven, CT. Construction is steel barrel, bolt, trigger, magazine tube, and internal parts housed in a lightweight alloy receiver with polymer trigger group assembly, and synthetic pistol grip type buttstock and forend. Chambering is 12 gauge – 2 3/4 inch, 3 inch, and even 3 1/2 inch shells interchangeably. Magazine capacity is 5+1 on 2 3/4 inch; 4+1 in 3 inch; and 3+1 on 3 1/2 inch. Barrel is 22 inch with 9 post .375 serrated top Ventilated Rib. Sights are rib-saddling green fiber optic front and twin red fiber optic tube rear that is windage and elevation adjustable, for a high visibility 3 dot sighting profile. Choke system is Accu-Choke®, same thread as old style Winchester Winchoke® and old style Browning Invector® systems. Choke tube furnished is a .670 muzzle diameter ported Turkey Extra Full, so no steel shot or slugs without changing tubes. The extension adds 1 1/2 inches to total barrel length. Since the 535’s barrel is not back bored, it is Slug safe with a correct tube, Improved Cylinder vicinity. Finish is entirely Mossy Oak Break-Up Infinity®, Forend and buttstock’s pistol grip area have lateral checkered surfaces. The 535, likes its 500 mate, has a pre-drilled and tapped receiver for Weaver #80 size optics bases; this Thug comes with a matching camo 12 slot Picatinny accessory rail on its receiver. Length of pull is 14 1/2 inches from the .250 LPA trigger to the end of the factory 1 inch recoil pad. Buttstock has two removable 1/2 inch butt pieces, so adjustable down to 13 1/2 inch LOP. The LPA, Lightning Pump Action set type trigger is adjustable, and issues at 4 pound vicinity with minimal felt creep. Stock drop is 1 1/2 inches at the comb, 2 1/2 inches at the heel and with a 3/4 inch right hand cant. Even though the safety itself is Southpaw friendly due to its top tang position, the buttstock will require professional adjustment for left handed shooters. Weight empty is 6 pounds 10 ounces, with center of gravity 1.5 inches forward of the breech face. This specimen is what we call a factory Demo. It has served light duty as a showgirl with Mossberg’s sales force on the road, with its writers, and at trade shows like the annual SHOT Show in Las Vegas. Surface detractions are minimal, only faint amounts of surface wear that amount to no more than display models one sees in gun stores across the country. We rate it as Excellent, 90 to 95 percent vicinity by our estimate, but its photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, choke threads and mechanism are bright and clean. If this gun has ever been fired, it was fewer than 15 to 20 times.
