This rifle (at least the action) was manufactured a the Rock Island Arsenal. This is an early serial # Rock Island (26XXX) and the action and bolt are considered unsafe due to heat treatment problems. If you are not familiar with this problem do a Google search. In truth I shot this rifle for many years with cast bullets. It has a 2 grove barrel that shot lead very well. Somewhere around 30 years ago I decided it was not worth the risk, and have not shot the rifle since. This rifle has a good barrel, and was an excellent cast bullet rifle. The rear receiver sight is a Pacific (later purchased by Redfield). This is a no drill sight that can be mounted on any 1903 or 1903 A3 rifle without modification to the receiver *. The front sight ramp is screwed the barrel (but there is no blade). This rifle has the early cast and machined trigger guard and butt plate (where as they are stamped steel on the later 03A3 models) although blued. The safety on the bolt does not operate smoothly (although it works fine). The cocking piece itself is parkerized green, leading me to believe that this is not original to this rifle. This rifle is being sold as parts only and priced as such. The Pacific rear sight is a big clunky in operation but it does work well and holds zero, it is also unique and of value. This is not a shooter, but would be great for someone who has an 03 or 03A3 action looking for a home. It’s very old school sporter. I can send additional photos upon request.
