Here is a utility-grade side by side manufactured by Stevens-Savage under the Newport Name some time, by our estimate, in the late 1930s. It came to us from a local estate, and its owner passed away many years ago. The manufacturer thought enough of it to serialize it on the water table area, and it is a well made shotgun, precursor to the Savage 5100 and 311s that are classics. Surface wear is extensive, to say the least, since the metal is a combination of brown patina and gun metal gray with only a hint here and there of the original bluind and casehardening. Buttstock and forend are original American Walnut from an old plain oil refinish and shim adjustment to the buttstock. We do not detect any cracks in either piece of walnut. Finishwise, we only rate it as good, but it is Very Good mechanically. Buttstock and forend are tight, lockup is tight, and even the safety bar is tight. Bore tubes and chambers are very good with no visible pitting inside. Breech lever and mechanism are sturdy and sound, and the lever cants only a couple of degrees to the left, as the photos will show. This is a very solid, serviceable old shotgun. Construction is entirely steel, so it will certainly handle any modern 2 3/4 inch 20 gauge shells so long as they are not steel shot, because the 28 inch barrels measure .498 and .503 at the muzzle, tight Modified and Full. Length of pull is 13 7/8 inches from the rear / left barrel trigger to the end of the buttplate. We’re offering this decent old veteran of the Forked Deer River bottomlands for only $ 269.95.
