Description: Iver Johnson .22 Caliber Target 8 Revolver

Barrel 6 in. octagon 8 shot, Double action Leather holster The following is stamped on the top of the barrel: I.J.A.&C.W. Fitchburg, MASS. U.S.A.

Stamped on the left side of the barrel: I.J. TARGET SEALED 8 The bottom of the trigger guard has 2373 stamped on it. Under the grip on the left side of the frame is stamped M2373

The gun was loaded with what ammo you see in the photo,1 spent cartridge, 5 lead cartridges and 2 brass hollow point cartridges. Was found in my grandma’s attic and has been there at least 40 years, waiting to be found. The mechanism is sound but the ammo is probably bad. The bluing is original and there is some rusting around the trigger guard and sporadic small rust specks in various places. Not much bluing left overall. No mechanical issues found but I have never shot this revolver. Functions well. The bore is clean, cylinder and pin are solid. Grips appear original and in excellent condition Would guess mfg.in the 40's. Octagon barrel is probably hard to find these days. Although a collector piece, if you buy this and intend to shoot with it, have the gunsmith or dealer that receives it check it out before attempting to fire. I am a novice and can make no shooting recommendation. Thanks for looking…Terry

Here is something I found on the web relating to history of the manufacturer: _____________________________________________________________________ I.J. TARGET SEALED 8 FIRST MODEL (OCTAGON BARREL) -----1 This revolver is the first major improvement of the solid frame double action model since its introduction in 1900. Large solid frame double action with pull in cylinder release; the cylinder features recessed chambers that fully enclosed the cartridge case head. Grips are one piece checkered wood. Caliber: 22 rim fire with 8 rounds cylinder capacity; Barrel shape is octagon; barrel lengths of 6 inches and 10 inches; Weight: 6 inch barrel 24 ounces, 10 inch barrel 27 ounces; Height without grips 3 7/8 inches; Frame length 4 7/8 inches; Overall length: 6 inch barrel 10 ¾ inches, 10 inch barrel 14 ¾ inches. The 1938 catalog gives this revolver a model number: 6 inch barrel Model 68, 10 inch barrel Model 78. DOES NOT HAVE HAMMER THE HAMMER AC
